What is Dermal Filler?

Hyaluronic acid (HA) is a substance naturally found in the skin that holds water and provides volume. HA fillers are cross-linked gels of different firmness, chosen to suit each area, from soft gels for fine lines and lips to firmer gels for the chin and nose.

Once injected, filler adds structure and fullness right away. Over time the body gradually breaks the gel down, so results are temporary and usually last from several months to over a year depending on the product and area. HA filler can be dissolved with an enzyme called hyaluronidase (Hyalase) if needed.

Filler is placed with a fine needle or a blunt cannula at the right depth for each area. Common areas include the forehead, temples, under-eyes, cheeks, nasolabial folds, lips, chin and jawline. The goal is balanced, natural-looking volume.

What to expect

A consultation comes first, including your medical history and any past filler. Most fillers contain lidocaine, and numbing cream can be applied. Injections usually take 15 to 30 minutes.

Results are visible immediately, though mild swelling may exaggerate volume for a few days. Redness, tenderness and bruising are common and usually settle within a week. Rare but serious risks, such as blood vessel blockage, are discussed at consultation; seek help promptly if you notice severe pain, skin color changes or vision changes.

The final shape is usually clear after about two weeks. A touch-up may be suggested if needed. Results vary.

Aftercare

• Avoid pressing or massaging the treated area unless instructed
• Skip saunas, hot baths, alcohol and intense exercise for a few days
• Avoid facial treatments on the area for about two weeks
• Sleep with your head slightly raised the first night
• Contact the clinic urgently for severe pain, blanching or vision problems
