What is Botox?

Botox is a commonly used name for botulinum toxin type A, a purified protein given by injection in very small doses. It blocks the signal between nerves and muscles, so the injected muscle relaxes temporarily. When injected into the skin, it can also reduce the activity of sweat glands.

The effect is temporary. Nerve connections gradually recover, and muscle movement returns over several months, which is why treatment is repeated periodically. Several brands of botulinum toxin are available, and your doctor will explain the options.

What to expect

Your visit begins with a consultation and assessment. A fine needle is used, and ice or numbing cream can be applied if you prefer. Injections usually take 5 to 15 minutes.

You can typically return to normal activities immediately. Small bumps, redness, mild swelling or bruising at injection sites may occur. Less commonly, headache or a temporary heavy or uneven feeling may develop; contact the clinic if this happens.

Wrinkle effects usually appear within 3 to 7 days and develop fully by about two weeks. Jaw slimming appears more gradually over 4 to 8 weeks. Effects generally last around 3 to 6 months, and results vary.

Aftercare

• Do not rub or massage treated areas for the rest of the day
• Stay upright for about 4 hours after facial injections
• Avoid saunas, heavy exercise and alcohol on the day of treatment
• Skip facial massages and other device treatments for a few days
• Return for a follow-up if results look uneven after two weeks

How long does Botox last?

Most effects last about 3 to 6 months, depending on the area, dose and individual metabolism. Masseter treatment can last longer after repeated sessions.

Who should not receive Botox?
