What is CO2 Laser?

The CO2 laser is strongly absorbed by water in skin tissue. This allows it to remove targeted tissue layer by layer with high precision, while the heat seals small vessels as it works.

Because it does not depend on pigment, it can remove lesions of any color. As the treated area heals, collagen and elastic fibers in the deeper skin may remodel, which can soften fine surrounding lines as a secondary effect.

The CO2 laser may be used for benign lesions such as:

• Moles that have been examined and judged benign
• Skin tags
• Common and flat warts
• Milia
• Syringoma
• Sebaceous hyperplasia
• Stubborn age spots or lentigines

How we treat it at Egg Clinic

Before any removal, the doctor examines each lesion. A mole that is changing, bleeding, irregular in color or shape, or growing quickly should be evaluated further, and a biopsy may be recommended rather than laser removal.

Once a lesion is confirmed as suitable, the doctor numbs the area and uses the laser to remove it to an appropriate depth. The face and neck are the most common treatment areas.

What to expect

You will have a consultation and lesion check first. Numbing cream or a small local anesthetic injection is used, and treatment generally takes 10 to 30 minutes depending on the number of lesions.

Afterward, the treated spots form small scabs that typically fall off within about a week. Temporary redness can follow and fade over several weeks. Deeper lesions may occasionally need a second session, usually about two months later. Possible side effects include temporary darkening, lightening or, rarely, scarring. Results vary.

Aftercare

• Apply the ointment or dressing as instructed
• Cleanse gently and use makeup from the day after, avoiding the treated spot if advised
• Moisturize frequently with a mild product
• Do not pick or remove scabs; let them fall naturally
• Avoid strenuous exercise, alcohol, saunas and steam rooms for one week
• Apply sunscreen outdoors to lower the risk of darkening

Frequently asked questions

Can any mole be removed with a CO2 laser?

No. The doctor checks each mole first. Any mole that looks suspicious or has changed recently needs proper evaluation, which may include a biopsy.

Will it leave a mark?

Most small lesions heal with minimal marks, but temporary redness or pigment change can occur, and deeper lesions carry some risk of a small scar.

Can warts come back?

Warts are caused by a virus and can recur. Additional treatment may be needed if new lesions appear.
