What is Wart Treatment?

Warts are caused by HPV infecting the top layer of skin, which leads to a rough, thickened growth. The virus spreads through direct contact or shared surfaces, especially where skin is damp or broken. Common types include common warts on the hands, plantar warts on the soles of the feet, and flat warts(verruca plana), which are small, smooth bumps often found on the face. Some warts fade on their own, while others persist or multiply for months or years.

How we treat it at Egg Clinic

A dermatologist first examines the growths to confirm they are warts and not another lesion such as a corn, seborrheic keratosis or something needing biopsy. Treatment is then chosen by wart type, size, location and your preferences.

Options include cryotherapy with liquid nitrogen, which freezes the wart tissue and usually needs repeated sessions, and topical treatments such as prescription keratolytics or immune-modulating creams. For stubborn or multiple warts, including flat warts on the face, the CO2 laser can precisely vaporize wart tissue. Intralesional injections may be considered in selected resistant cases. Combining methods can sometimes improve results.

What to expect

During your visit, the physician explains the expected number of sessions. Cryotherapy stings briefly and may form a blister that dries over one to two weeks. For CO2 laser removal, a numbing cream or local anesthetic is used, and the procedure takes about 10 to 30 minutes. The area then forms a scab that typically heals within about a week. Redness, tenderness, blistering and temporary pigment change are possible. Because the virus can remain in surrounding skin, warts often need several treatments, commonly two to four weeks apart for cryotherapy or about two months apart for laser, and recurrence can occur.

Aftercare

• Keep the treated area clean and let scabs or blisters heal naturally
• Avoid strenuous exercise, alcohol and saunas for about one week after laser treatment
• Do not pick, shave over or bite warts, which can spread the virus
• Wear sandals in shared showers and avoid sharing towels or nail tools
• Apply any prescribed topical as directed between visits
• Use sunscreen on treated facial areas
