What is Mole Removal?

A mole, or melanocytic nevus, is a cluster of pigment cells that forms a brown, black or skin-colored spot, which may be flat or raised. Most people have several moles, and new ones can appear through early adulthood. The vast majority are benign. However, melanoma, a serious form of skin cancer, can arise within a mole or look like one, so any mole that is changing or unusual should be examined before removal is considered.

What to expect

Numbing cream or a small local anesthetic injection is used, so most people feel only mild discomfort. A laser session takes about 10 to 30 minutes depending on the number of moles. Afterward, each site forms a small scab that typically falls off within about a week, leaving pink new skin that gradually matures over weeks to months. Deeper moles may leave a small indentation or may partly recur and need a second session after about two months. Possible side effects include redness, temporary darkening or lightening and, less commonly, scarring. Results vary.

Aftercare

• Avoid strenuous exercise, alcohol, saunas and steam rooms for about one week
• Let scabs fall off on their own; do not pick or scratch them
• Wash your face and apply makeup only from the day after treatment, avoiding the treated spots if still open
• Use a mild cleanser and apply moisturizer or regenerating cream frequently
• Apply sunscreen when outdoors to reduce the risk of dark marks

Frequently asked questions

Will my mole come back after laser removal?

Most small moles respond well, but some pigment cells may remain in deeper layers, and partial recurrence is possible. A follow-up session can be performed if needed.

Does laser removal leave a scar?

Laser removal of small moles usually heals with a small, flat mark that fades over time. Larger or deeper moles have a higher chance of a visible mark or slight indentation.

Can every mole be removed with laser?

No. Moles that look atypical or are changing should be excised and tested rather than lasered. Your dermatologist will recommend the safest approach for each mole.
