What is Skin Tag Removal?

Skin tags, also called acrochordons, are small, soft, skin-colored or slightly brown growths that hang from the skin, sometimes on a thin stalk. They are made of loose collagen fibers and blood vessels covered by skin. Skin tags are very common and harmless. They tend to develop where skin rubs against skin or clothing, such as the neck, underarms, eyelids, groin and under the breasts. They are more common with age, during pregnancy and in people with diabetes or higher body weight, and they may run in families.

Skin tag removal may be suitable if you have:

• Small, soft growths on the neck, eyelids or underarms
• Tags that catch on necklaces, collars or straps
• Tags that become irritated, red or bleed after rubbing

How we treat it at Egg Clinic

A dermatologist examines the growths to confirm they are skin tags and not other lesions, such as moles, warts or seborrheic keratoses, which may need a different approach. Removal methods include:

• CO2 laser: precisely vaporizes the tag at its base, with minimal bleeding, and is well suited to multiple small tags
• Snip excision: larger tags on a stalk may be removed with sterile instruments
• Other methods: such as electrocautery in selected cases

Tags on the eyelids and neck are common treatment areas and are handled with particular care.

What to expect

Numbing cream or a small amount of local anesthetic is applied, so the procedure is generally well tolerated. Treatment takes 10 to 30 minutes, depending on how many tags are removed. Afterward, small scabs form and usually fall off within about a week. The skin may stay slightly pink for a few weeks. Possible side effects include redness, minor bleeding, temporary pigment change and, rarely, scarring. Treated tags do not usually return, but new ones may develop over time. Results vary.

Aftercare

• Avoid strenuous exercise, alcohol, saunas and steam rooms for about one week
• Let scabs fall off on their own; do not pick or scratch them
• Wash your face and apply makeup only from the day after treatment, avoiding the treated spots if still open
• Use a mild cleanser and apply moisturizer or regenerating cream frequently
• Apply sunscreen when outdoors to reduce the risk of dark marks

Frequently asked questions

Are skin tags a sign of something serious?

Skin tags themselves are harmless. Having many can sometimes be associated with insulin resistance, so your dermatologist may suggest a general health check in some cases.

Can I tie off or cut skin tags at home?

We do not recommend it. Home removal can cause bleeding, infection and scarring, and some growths that look like tags may need proper evaluation.

Is it safe to remove tags near the eyes?

Yes, when performed by a trained doctor with appropriate eye protection and technique. Eyelid tags are a common treatment area.
