What is Acne Scar Treatment?

Acne scars form when deep inflammation damages the collagen that supports the skin. As the skin heals, it may lay down too little collagen, leaving depressions, or occasionally too much, leaving raised scars. Common types include rolling scars with soft, wavy edges, boxcar scars with sharper borders and narrow, deep icepick scars. Scars are different from post-inflammatory marks, which are flat areas of brown or red discoloration that often fade with time.

Your dermatologist first examines your skin to identify the type and depth of scarring and to confirm that active acne is under control. Different scars respond to different tools, so most plans combine methods.

Potenza is our main microneedle radiofrequency device for acne scars. Fine needles create tiny channels in the skin while radiofrequency energy is delivered into the deeper layers, stimulating the production of new collagen and elastin. Needle depth can be adjusted from about 0.5 mm to 4.0 mm, and multiple tip options allow treatment to be tailored to your skin. Common areas include the full face, cheeks, cheekbone area and forehead.

Depending on your scars, your plan may also include CO2 laser resurfacing, targeted treatment for individual deep scars, or toning and vascular lasers to address lingering pigmentation or redness.

What to expect

A numbing cream is applied before treatment to improve comfort. A Potenza session usually takes 30 to 60 minutes. Afterward, redness, mild swelling and tiny pinpoint marks are common and generally settle within about a day. Because collagen rebuilds gradually, improvements tend to appear over weeks to months. Most patients need several sessions spaced two to three weeks apart. Results vary with scar type and depth.

Aftercare

• Avoid rubbing or otherwise stimulating the treated area
• Skip alcohol, smoking and intense exercise on the day of treatment and rest well
• Moisturize often with a gentle, regenerating cream
• Apply sunscreen thoroughly and reapply when outdoors
• Minimize direct sun exposure while the skin recovers

Frequently asked questions

Can acne scars be completely removed?

Scars can often be improved noticeably, but complete removal is not realistic for most people. The goal is smoother texture and less visible scarring, and results vary from person to person.

Should I treat scars while I still have acne?

Active breakouts should be controlled first, as inflammation can affect healing. Your dermatologist may treat acne and scars in parallel or in sequence depending on your skin.

Does Potenza also help pores?

Yes. Because it stimulates collagen, microneedle radiofrequency may also help refine enlarged pores and improve overall skin texture alongside scars.
