What is Syringoma Treatment?

A syringoma is a benign growth of the sweat duct cells in the dermis. Syringomas appear as small, firm, skin-colored or yellowish bumps, typically one to three millimeters across, and often form in clusters. The lower eyelids and under-eye area are the most common sites, though they can also appear on the cheeks, forehead, neck or chest. They are more common in women and in East Asian skin, often appear from adolescence onward and may run in families. Syringomas are harmless and usually symptom-free, but they tend to persist and can gradually increase in number.

What to expect

Numbing cream is applied before treatment for comfort. Sessions take about 10 to 30 minutes. Afterward, the area may be red and slightly swollen with small scabs that usually fall off within about a week. Improvement builds over multiple sessions spaced about two months apart. Because syringomas are rooted in the dermis, recurrence is possible, and complete clearance cannot be expected in every case. Possible side effects include redness, swelling, temporary darkening of the skin and, less commonly, scarring. Results vary.

Aftercare

• Avoid strenuous exercise, alcohol, saunas and steam rooms for about one week
• Let scabs fall off on their own; do not pick or scratch them
• Wash your face and apply makeup only from the day after treatment, avoiding the treated spots if still open
• Use a mild cleanser and apply moisturizer or regenerating cream frequently
• Apply sunscreen when outdoors to reduce the risk of dark marks

Frequently asked questions

Are syringomas the same as milia?

No. Milia are small keratin cysts near the surface that can often be extracted, while syringomas are sweat duct growths in the deeper skin that usually need laser treatment.

Why does treatment take several sessions?

Removing deep lesions all at once increases the risk of scarring and pigmentation. Staged sessions allow the skin to heal between treatments.

Can syringomas come back?

Yes, recurrence is possible because they originate in the dermis. Follow-up sessions can be planned if new or recurring lesions appear.
