Psoriasis Treatment

What is Psoriasis Treatment?

Psoriasis is a long-term inflammatory condition in which the immune system speeds up the growth of skin cells. Instead of shedding over weeks, cells build up quickly, forming raised, red or darker plaques covered with silvery-white scale. The most common form, plaque psoriasis, often affects the elbows, knees, scalp and lower back, but it can appear anywhere, including the nails. Psoriasis tends to run in families and can be triggered or worsened by stress, infections, skin injury, some medications, smoking and alcohol. It is not contagious. Some people also develop joint pain, known as psoriatic arthritis.

Who it's for

Consider a psoriasis evaluation if you have:

  • Well-defined, raised patches with silvery or white scale
  • Persistent scaling on the scalp that extends beyond the hairline
  • Itching, burning or cracking of plaques
  • Pitted, thickened or discolored nails
  • New patches appearing at sites of scratches or injury
  • Joint pain, stiffness or swelling alongside skin symptoms

How we treat it at Egg Clinic

Diagnosis is made by a dermatologist through examination of your skin, scalp and nails, and occasionally a skin biopsy when the picture is unclear. We assess how much of the body is involved and how it affects your daily life. Treatment options may include:

  • Topical treatment: prescription creams, ointments or scalp solutions to reduce inflammation and scaling
  • Keratolytic care: products that soften and lift thick scale so treatments work better
  • Oral medication: for moderate to severe or widespread disease, with appropriate monitoring
  • Intralesional injection: for small, stubborn plaques in selected cases
  • Referral for phototherapy or advanced therapies: when more intensive treatment is appropriate

If you have joint symptoms, we may recommend assessment by a rheumatologist.

What to expect

Your first visit includes a full skin check and a discussion of your history, triggers and goals. Most treatments are applied at home, with follow-up visits to monitor progress and side effects. Improvement often begins within several weeks, though psoriasis is a chronic condition that can come and go. The aim is to reduce plaques and keep flares manageable. Results vary. Seek urgent care if you develop widespread redness over most of your body, pustules with fever, or feel unwell.

Aftercare

  • Moisturize daily to soften scale and reduce cracking
  • Apply treatments exactly as prescribed and attend follow-up visits
  • Avoid scratching, picking or injuring the skin
  • Take lukewarm baths and pat the skin dry gently
  • Limit alcohol and avoid smoking, which can worsen psoriasis

Frequently asked questions

Can psoriasis spread to other people?

No. Psoriasis is an immune-related condition, not an infection, and it cannot be passed on through contact.

Will my psoriasis ever go away?

Psoriasis is usually long-term, but many people achieve extended periods of clear or nearly clear skin with the right treatment. Your plan will be adjusted over time.

Does diet affect psoriasis?

There is no single psoriasis diet, but maintaining a healthy weight, limiting alcohol and not smoking are associated with better control for many people.
