What is Seborrheic Dermatitis?

Seborrheic dermatitis is a common, long-term inflammatory condition that affects areas rich in oil glands. It is thought to involve an inflammatory reaction to Malassezia, a yeast that normally lives on the skin, along with oil production and individual sensitivity. On the scalp it can appear as dandruff; on the face it often shows up as greasy, yellowish or white scales on a red or pink base around the eyebrows, nose, ears and hairline. Flares are often linked to stress, lack of sleep, cold dry weather and hormonal changes. It is not contagious and is not caused by poor hygiene.
