Atopic Dermatitis (Eczema)
What is Atopic Dermatitis (Eczema)?
Atopic dermatitis is a chronic, inflammatory skin condition linked to a weakened skin barrier and an overactive immune response. The skin loses moisture easily and reacts more strongly to irritants and allergens, leading to itching, redness and dry patches. Scratching further damages the barrier, creating an itch-scratch cycle. It often starts in childhood but can continue or appear in adulthood, and it is frequently associated with asthma, hay fever or a family history of allergies. It is not contagious.
Who it's for
Consider an eczema assessment if you have:
- Persistent itching, especially at night
- Dry, rough or scaly patches of skin
- Red or darkened patches in skin folds, on the face, neck, hands or eyelids
- Thickened skin from long-term scratching
- Oozing, crusting or cracked skin during flares
- Flares linked to weather, stress, sweat or certain fabrics
How we treat it at Egg Clinic
Diagnosis is based on a dermatologist's examination and your history. We also look for signs of infection or other conditions, such as contact dermatitis, that can look similar. Treatment is tailored to your severity and the areas affected:
- Barrier repair: guidance on moisturizers, gentle cleansers and bathing habits
- Topical anti-inflammatory treatment: prescription creams or ointments to settle flares, used according to a clear plan
- Itch relief: oral medication when itching disrupts sleep or daily life
- Infection management: treatment if the skin shows signs of secondary infection
- Trigger review: identifying irritants, allergens and habits that may worsen symptoms
For more severe or widespread disease, your dermatologist may discuss systemic or advanced therapies, or refer you where appropriate.
What to expect
Your first visit includes a thorough history and skin examination, followed by a written care plan explaining how and when to use each product. Treatment is non-invasive. Many patients notice less itching and redness within one to two weeks of starting treatment, although eczema tends to flare and settle over time. Follow-up visits help adjust treatment and reduce reliance on stronger medications. Results vary, and long-term management is usually needed. Seek prompt care if the skin becomes painful, spreads rapidly, develops punched-out sores or blisters, or you develop a fever.
Aftercare
- Apply moisturizer at least twice daily and right after bathing
- Take short, lukewarm showers and use a mild, fragrance-free cleanser
- Wear soft, breathable fabrics such as cotton
- Keep nails short and try to avoid scratching
- Use prescribed treatments exactly as instructed, including on flare-free days if advised
Frequently asked questions
Can eczema go away completely?
Eczema often improves with age and good care, but it is usually a long-term condition that comes and goes. The aim of treatment is to control flares and keep the skin comfortable.
Are prescription creams safe to use on the face?
Some treatments are suitable for delicate areas and others are not. Your dermatologist will choose products and a schedule appropriate for each area to limit side effects.
Can food allergies cause my eczema?
Food can play a role for some people, particularly young children, but it is not the main driver for most adults. We can discuss whether allergy testing is worthwhile in your case.
