What is Cherry Angioma Removal?

A cherry angioma, also called a senile angioma or Campbell de Morgan spot, is a benign growth formed by a cluster of dilated capillaries. It usually appears as a round, cherry-red dot or dome, from pinpoint size to several millimeters. They are most common on the trunk and arms but can occur anywhere, and they tend to increase in number after age 30. Because they are made of blood vessels, larger ones can bleed if scratched or caught on clothing.

You may want an evaluation if you have:

• Bright red or purple dots or small bumps on the skin
• Spots that are increasing in number over time
• Lesions that bleed easily when shaved or rubbed
• Angiomas on visible areas such as the face, neck or chest
• A red or dark lesion that changes quickly, bleeds without injury or looks different, which should be checked promptly

How we treat it at Egg Clinic

Diagnosis comes first. A dermatologist examines each spot, often with dermoscopy, to confirm that it is a cherry angioma and not another vascular or pigmented lesion that needs different care.

For most angiomas, we use the Excel V laser. Its KTP 532 nm wavelength and long-pulse Nd:YAG mode deliver light that is absorbed by hemoglobin in the vessels, heating and closing them while a sapphire cooling tip protects the skin surface. Small flat lesions often respond well to this approach. Larger, raised angiomas may be removed with the CO2 laser or electrocautery for a more precise, one-step result.

What to expect

After your consultation, a numbing cream may be applied depending on the number and size of the spots. A vascular laser session generally takes 10 to 20 minutes. You may feel a brief snapping or warm sensation, eased by the cooling tip. Treated spots may darken, look slightly bruised or form a small crust, and mild redness usually settles within about a day. Many small angiomas fade after one session, while others need two or three treatments about two weeks apart. Raised lesions removed with CO2 laser heal over about a week. New angiomas can appear over time.

Aftercare

• Apply moisturizer to treated spots and use sunscreen when outdoors
• Avoid strenuous exercise, alcohol, saunas and steam rooms for up to two weeks, as advised
• Do not pick at crusts; let them fall off naturally
• Avoid peeling or scrub products on treated areas
• Resume makeup and gentle cleansing from the day after treatment unless told otherwise

A treated angioma usually does not return in the same spot, but new ones can develop elsewhere with age.
