Tattoo ink is placed in the dermis, below the surface of the skin, where the particles are too large for the body to remove. Laser tattoo removal delivers very short, high-energy pulses that are absorbed by the ink and shatter it into smaller fragments. Over the following weeks, the immune system gradually carries these fragments away, and the tattoo fades. Picosecond lasers such as PicoSure deliver extremely short pulses that can break ink into finer particles, while RevLite offers several wavelengths for different ink colors.

What to expect

Numbing cream and cooling are used to improve comfort; the sensation is often compared to a rubber band snapping against the skin. Immediately afterward the area may turn white briefly, then become red and swollen. Blistering, pinpoint bleeding and crusting can occur and usually heal within one to two weeks. Tattoos fade gradually across sessions. Black ink generally responds most readily, while some colors such as green, light blue and yellow can be more difficult. The number of sessions varies widely, and complete removal is not always possible. Possible side effects include temporary lightening or darkening of the skin and, rarely, texture change or scarring.

Aftercare

• Keep the area clean and apply the ointment or dressing as instructed
• Do not pick blisters or crusts; let them heal naturally
• Avoid swimming, saunas, hot baths and strenuous exercise until healed
• Protect the treated area from sun exposure
• Contact the clinic if you notice increasing pain, pus or spreading redness

How many sessions will I need?

It depends on the tattoo's colors, density, depth, age and location, as well as your immune response. Many tattoos need multiple sessions, and your dermatologist will give an estimate after assessment.

Can every tattoo be removed completely?

Not always. Many tattoos can be faded substantially, but some ink colors and professional tattoos with dense ink may leave faint traces.

Why must sessions be spaced so far apart?

The body needs several weeks to clear fragmented ink, and the skin needs time to heal. Waiting between sessions supports both safety and progress.
