Treatment time: About 45–60 min

Downtime: Minimal; mild tenderness for 1–2 days

Sessions: Usually 3–4 sessions about 4 weeks apart, then maintenance

Scalp PRP

What is Scalp PRP?

PRP stands for platelet-rich plasma. A small amount of your blood is drawn and spun in a centrifuge to separate a concentrated layer of platelets. Platelets contain growth factors that play a role in tissue repair.

When PRP is injected into the scalp, these growth factors may help support weakened follicles, prolong the hair growth phase and improve hair thickness. Because it uses your own blood, the risk of allergic reaction is low. Results vary, and PRP is usually used as part of a broader plan.

Who it's for

Scalp PRP may suit people who have:

  • Gradual thinning at the crown or part line
  • Early androgenetic (pattern) hair loss in men or women
  • Reduced hair density or finer hair strands
  • Hair shedding after stress or illness, once medical causes are checked
  • Interest in combining PRP with other hair loss treatments

How we treat it at Egg Clinic

A dermatologist assesses your scalp and hair loss pattern first, and may suggest blood tests to rule out thyroid, iron or other causes. Sudden patchy hair loss, scalp pain or scarring should be evaluated before any cosmetic treatment.

  • Preparation: blood is drawn and processed to concentrate platelets
  • Injection: PRP is placed evenly across thinning areas of the scalp
  • Combination: may be paired with topical or oral treatments prescribed by your physician

What to expect

The visit includes a blood draw, about 10–15 minutes of processing, then the injections. Numbing or cooling can be used, and most people describe a pressure or stinging sensation. The whole appointment takes about 45 to 60 minutes.

Mild tenderness, swelling or pinpoint bleeding may occur and usually settles within a day or two; headache or bruising is possible. Hair changes are gradual, and most people evaluate progress after three to six months. An initial series is typically followed by maintenance sessions, and results vary.

Aftercare

  • Avoid washing your hair for the rest of the day
  • Skip hair dye, perms and strong styling products for a few days
  • Avoid saunas, alcohol and strenuous exercise for 24 hours
  • Do not scratch or massage the scalp hard
  • Continue any prescribed hair loss treatment unless told otherwise

Frequently asked questions

Is scalp PRP painful?

Numbing or cooling helps, and most people find it manageable. The scalp may feel tender for a day.

When will I notice a difference?

Hair grows slowly, so changes are usually assessed after several months. Results vary between individuals.

Can PRP replace medication?

PRP is often used alongside other treatments rather than instead of them. Your physician will recommend a combined plan.
