Downtime: Minimal; pigment may darken and flake over days

Joule BBL

What is Joule BBL?

Joule BBL emits broadband light across wavelengths of about 420 to 1400 nm. By selecting filters, energy can be matched to different targets: melanin in pigmented spots, hemoglobin in dilated vessels and acne-causing bacteria, all through selective photothermolysis.

Unlike older IPL systems with uneven energy peaks, BBL uses a flat-top pulse that delivers consistent intensity across the treatment window. A sapphire cooling tip protects the epidermis. SkinTyte mode uses infrared light to gently heat the dermis and support collagen for firmer skin.

Who it's for

Joule BBL may suit people concerned about:

  • Mild sagging or loss of firmness
  • Facial flushing and visible small vessels
  • Sun spots, freckles and uneven tone
  • Large pores and rough texture
  • Mild acne activity
  • Wanting a regular skin-maintenance treatment

How we treat it at Egg Clinic

Your doctor chooses filters and settings based on your skin type and main concerns, then treats the area in passes. Pigment and vascular modes are often followed by SkinTyte for tightening in the same visit.

Treatment areas include the full face and neck, and SkinTyte mode can also be used on body areas such as the abdomen, thighs and buttocks.

What to expect

After a consultation and cleansing, protective eyewear is provided. You may feel warm snaps with each flash. Sessions take about 10 to 20 minutes depending on the area.

Temporary redness and a warm or burning feeling may occur and usually settle within a few days. Treated pigment often darkens and may form fine scabs that shed naturally over one to two weeks; full clearing of the skin can take three to four weeks.

An initial series with sessions 1 to 2 weeks apart is common, followed by periodic maintenance. Results vary, and sun protection is essential.

Aftercare

  • Cleanse gently and wear makeup from the day after if comfortable
  • Do not pick at darkened spots or scabs
  • Avoid peeling products and exfoliation
  • Skip strenuous exercise, alcohol and saunas for one week
  • Moisturize daily and apply broad-spectrum sunscreen

Frequently asked questions

Is BBL the same as IPL?

Both use broadband light, but BBL delivers a more uniform flat-top pulse and includes dedicated modes such as SkinTyte. Your doctor tailors settings to your skin.

Why do my spots look darker after treatment?

Treated pigment often darkens before it flakes off. This is an expected part of the process and usually clears within a couple of weeks.

Is it suitable for all skin types?

Light-based treatments carry a higher risk of pigment changes in darker or tanned skin. Your doctor will assess your skin and may recommend alternatives.
